This week’s Olds Grizzlys Player Spotlight goes to Brendan Thomas! The returning defenceman who earned an ‘A’ on his jersey this season has played 20 games in which he’s had 7 assists, all of which have come in the last 5 games. Brendan, or “Bert” as he’s widely known in the community, joined the Grizzlys last December when he was acquired via trade with the Whitecourt Wolverines, where he started his rookie season playing 21 games and getting 1 assist, before playing in 26 games in the Black & Gold where he scored 3 goals and 2 assists.
Thomas, born in 2006, hails from Calgary, just down the road from Olds, and played in Calgarys AA and AAA systems through minor hockey where in his final year, playing for the Calgary Buffaloes U18 AAA, won the AEHL U18 championship. Since joining the Grizzlys, Bert has been an integral part of the defence core as the oldest and most experienced defender on the team and a great leader for young defencemen coming in. Thomas’s game is more than points, his steady shutdown play with puckmoving ability has made him a great two-way defender making him valuable in any situation whether it’s powerplay, penalty kill or overtime.
Catch Bert and the rest of the boys in Black & Gold when the Drumheller Dragons are back in town for a rematch of this Saturdays overtime win this Friday at the Olds Sportsplex!
