The Olds Grizzlys are back on the ice as a team, back after a much needed Christmas break for our Boys in Black & Gold!
The boys played their returning game against the Canmore Eagles as they made the trip out west to the mountains for the first time this year. The Eagles announced in the morning the game was sold out and NHL Alumni Kevin Bieksa was even attendance. Unfortunately, not much good came from this matchup, as the Grizzlys came short in an 8-0 loss to their divisional competitors. With lots of scrums, and captain Hunter Motley dropping the gloves with Landon Scott in a bonafide whooping, the Grizzlys were focused on getting ready to take on the Drumheller Dragons at home.
Sunday January 4th rolled around and the Drumheller Dragons were visiting the Olds Sportsplex for the final time this season. The Grizzlys, who held a 3-0 season series streak against the Dragons were looking to extend it to 4-0. The game started off strong when rookie Calder Hutt was tripped up on a breakaway and awarded a penalty shot. Hutt went on to score a goal of the year contender to get the Grizzlys on the board with a beautiful dangle that ended with roofing a backhand shot and finding the back of the net, for the second goal of his rookie season. The lead was short lived as Drumheller struck right back to tie things up to end the first. The second had a strong start when rookie forward Finn Bagley was able to drive the net and go past two Dragons defenceman and the goalie to sneak in his first career junior hockey goal! The momentum was high after a beauty from Bags, but once again the game was tied up by the Dragons. That was it for the Grizzlys, as the Dragons would capitalize on two miscommunications and net two more to take a 4-2 lead after 40. The Dragons would get another tally shortly into the 3rd and finish the game off with a short-handed empty net goal to go back to Drumheller with a 6-2 win.
The Grizzlys look to get back in the win column when the Devon Xtreme are in Olds for the final face-off of the season between the two teams for a Tuesday night matchup where its College Night at the Sportsplex!
