Weekend Recap: Grizzlys Split Northern Road Trip

Over this last weekend, the Grizzlys went back up north for two games against the Devon Xtreme and Whitecourt Wolverines.

The weekend started in Devon at the GFL Twin Arena, where the two teams met for the first time this season. The first period was off to a hot start as Jordan Wales started off the scoring, netting his 3rd goal of the season, giving the Grizz a 1-0 lead after the first. Unfortunately, the rest of the game didn’t keep up to that pace as the Xtreme would go on to score 4 unanswered goals to take two points. Corbin Sanderman led the way, making 27 saves in the most disciplined game of the season as the Grizzlys only took 2 penalty minutes through 60 minutes.

Saturday saw action between the Grizzlys and the Wolverines at the JDA Place in Whitecourt in the last game of another northern road trip. Our guys in black and gold were hungry for a win after seeing 6 consecutive losses and were looking for revenge after playing a highly competitive game against the #1 team in the AJHL just two games earlier. The first period started with David Hoy lighting the lamp for his first career AJHL goal, giving the Grizzlys the lead after 20 minutes of play. The only action seen in the second period was a tying goal from the Wolverines, making the score 1-1 going into the final frame of play. Tensions were high leading into the final period of play, and the Grizzlys capitalized on one of their biggest flaws by finding the back of the net on the power play when Sean Richards scored his 4th of the season to get the game-winning goal! The action wasn’t over there as Olds’ born Rhett Miller dropped the gloves with Ethan Short in a last-minute tilt to really get the sparks flying for the team. Connor Johnson stood on his head tonight, making 39 saves and leading the way. David Hoy finished the game with an empty netter, finishing the game with 2 goals and 1 assist, where he was rewarded Player of the Game!

The Grizzlys are back at home this upcoming weekend when they face the Calgary Canucks in their first faceoff of the regular season in a Halloween Night matchup. Followed by the Camrose Kodiaks coming to the Olds Sportsplex for a Battle of the Bears game.
