Weekend Recap: Opening Weekend

Following a highly succesful preseason going 4-1 with high scoring games and lots of action, the Olds Grizzlys opened up the regular season in Drayton Valley to face off against the Thunder who were a divisional rival of the Grizz last season.

Newly named assistant captain, Rhett Miller, opened up the scoring halfway through the first period, before the Thunder tied the game in the dying minutes of the first. The two teams then had a scoreless second period, before the Thunder took control of the third period scoring three unanswered goals to take the lead and send the Grizzlys back to Olds.

The following night the Grizzlys hosted the Camrose Kodiaks for the Home Hardware Home Opener, where we got to see both teams newly traded players in Quinn Abbott, Hubert Larose, and Ryland Molde, faced-off against their former teams for the battle of bears. While this game didn’t end the way Olds would’ve wanted being outscored 4-8 by Camrose, the Sportsplex was treated to lots of firsts as Dexter Materi, Sam Giangualano, Sean Richards, and Ryland Molde all scored their first career AJHL goals, along with goaltender Sharky Nowek seeing the ice for his first AJHL game to get a bright start to their seasons donning the black and gold.

The Grizzlys look to turn things around as they start a three game home stretch to end september before heading on the road for most of october. Join the Grizzlys at the Olds Sportsplex for this weeks games:
